The Index Museorum presents a directory for the museums, universities, institutions, private collections, and other repositories where type material of oligochaetes named in the accounts in this nomenclator have been deposited. During the preparation of the original volume of Nomenclatura Oligochaetologica (Reynolds and Cook, 1976), the authors established a four letter code for each repository of type material to eliminate confusion as the number of repositories increased. While many repositories include an acronym as part of the accession numbers assigned to type material that are the same as the acronym historically associated with that repository, many others have not established an institutional acronym that is associated with accession numbers assigned to types. Furthermore, the use of institutional acronyms (codes) and accession numbers for types discussed in historical and recent descriptions has been inconsistent, and sometimes misleading and/or incorrect. Institutions have changed names (usually for administrative, organizational, and/or political reasons), often resulting in new acronyms and names for the ‘collection’ in which type material has been archived. We have corrected these mistakes and also cross-referenced institutional codes when possible.
